CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Two-Day Intensive Institutes

Two-Day institutes offer an intensive and in-depth experience for educators who want to deepen their understanding in an area of their choice. See descriptions on following pages. Pre-Registration is required.

Parent Resource Center

The Rosalía Salinas Parent Resource Center is exclusively for parents to provide a welcome and an orientation to parent attendees. The Parent Resource Center will be open daily

Administrative Leadership Symposium

Friday, March 24, 2023 (10:30 am – 2:30 pm)

This dynamic half-day session is designed for educational leaders dedicated to the success of English Learner and Biliteracy students. Complimentary for Superintendents, School Board Members, and Assistant Superintendents. (Other district and site leaders are invited to attend as part of their CABE 2023 registration for an additional fee of $50.) Pre‑Registration is required.

CABE Educational Film Festival

Enjoy new relevant films shown on Thursday and Friday of the conference!

Asian Language Programs

CABE 2023 is proud to provide key resources and sessions on teaching Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian languages in dual language and world language programs.

Spanish Language Partners

CABE’s partnerships with Mexico, Spain, Peru, and other Latin American Countries will be highlighted throughout CABE 2023.

EL Roadmap and State Seal of Biliteracy

Deepen your knowledge about the California English Learner Roadmap! Special sessions on resources and tools to implement effective and successful biliteracy programs and the State Seal of Biliteracy as promoted by Prop 58.

School Site Visits

All Badges will be Printed On-Site
Please bring your confirmation letter with your barcode either by paper or on your mobile device. This will allow you to print your badge on-site quickly!

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE
Name badges must be worn for admittance to all conference events, workshops, and exhibit hall.

If badge is lost or forgotten, please be advised that requests for replacement badges prior to or during the conference will be charged the full price paid when registration was first submitted. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY.

DISCOUNTED PRICE FOR DISTRICT TEAMS

School districts designating CABE 2023 as “Staff Development Day(s),” will be provided a registration incentive of one free registration (excluding meals and other paid events) when a group of 15 registrations are submitted. These registrations must all be the same (either a full four-day pass or a one-day pass) regardless of the category: member, non-member, administrator, teacher, paraeducator, parent, or student. All 15 registrations must be submitted on the same purchase order. Purchase order and checks should list all registrants and indicate the type of registration as District Team Registration
.

REGISTRATION REGULATIONS

Requests for Cancellation Refunds
All requests for refunds must be made in writing and submitted to CABE Headquarters prior to February 6, 2023. Refunds will be processed and mailed out after the conference. A 20% processing fee will be assessed on all requests. There will be no refunds or exchanges for meal or event tickets. Refund requests postmarked after February 6, 2023 will not be honored.

Processing Fee for Mail, Fax or Email Registrations
A processing fee of $50 will be applied for all mail-in, fax or email registrations. To avoid this fee, it is encouraged that you register online.

Membership Verification
To receive a membership discount, each conference participant must be a member with an expiration date no earlier than March 31, 2023. If it is determined after registration that membership is not current, conference attendee will be invoiced for either membership dues owed or the balance of the non-member rate for the conference. 

Substitutions
Names can be substituted on registration forms upon receipt of a written request. Any substituted discounted member registration for a non-member registration will be assessed the difference in registration fee that is due upon such request via revised P.O., check or credit card. NO SUBSTITUTIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER FEBRUARY 6, 2023.

TWO–DAY INTENSIVE INSTITUTES

Project GLAD® Foundations: Including the Research and Theory Workshop to Support Language Learners (12 hours)

What does the research say about the best way to support language learners? Participants will explore evidence-based strategies and a proven method to support students as they develop their language skills. Connect with our OCDE Project GLAD® network of dedicated educators, tap into our free resources, and find ways to help students develop. Have fun, connect, and learn with us as we find ways to support our students based on research and practical evidence from the field.

Los invitamos a todos a participar en el instituto de lenguaje en español. Vengan todos a aprender cómo funciona el español y cómo enseñarlo de manera eficaz y divertida. Estudiaremos profundamente la enseñanza basada en los estándares con énfasis en aquellos que son específicos al idioma español. Nos enfocaremos en la integración coherente entre los dominios del lenguaje. Demostraremos cómo planear la instrucción con los Estándares de Desarrollo del Idioma Español y compartiremos estrategias que facilitan la enseñanza del español como segunda lengua. Modelaremos lecciones de lectoescritura enfatizando cómo funciona el español. Planning for Effective Integrated and Designated ELD Institute

Presenters: CABE Team

Are you looking for ways to deepen your understanding of how to plan for and implement Integrated and Designated English Language Development (ELD)? This two-day institute will provide a deep dive into the California’s English Language Arts (ELA)/English Language Development (ELD) Frameworks in order to create and expand systemic, intentional, and effective ELD instruction. Important components of Integrated and Designated ELD will be examined, including content, language, and sociocultural objectives, differentiated sentence frames, use of graphic organizers, and structured academic language development. Learn the steps for planning high-quality Integrated and Designated ELD lessons and how to put them into practice!

ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS

Two-Way Bilingual/Dual Immersion Programs: Dual language immersion integrates native English speaking and English language learning students in the same classroom and provides academic instruction through two languages, one of which is the primary language of each group (e.g. Spanish and English). The students learn a second language while they are learning content. The goal of this program is to promote high levels of bilingualism/bi-literacy in two languages.

CABE 2023 offers visits to three high-quality dual language programs in diverse languages.

1c. Mandarin/English

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

Two-Way Bilingual/Dual Immersion: This middle school program is for both English Learners (Spanish) and English Only students at the middle school level. Students interact as language models for each other in different content areas. The goal for all students is that they learn English and meet grade-appropriate academic achievement standards for grade promotion and graduation; and become bi-literate and multicultural scholars. The visit provides examples and models of how to grow a dual language program to the secondary level.

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS

a. Heritage Language Program: This program will showcase foreign language instruction in the 21st Century and how it offers high school students the opportunity to further develop and achieve communicative competence through a variety of strategies and best practices to support language acquisition and cultural competencies. The goal of these program is for students to apply their language skills and cultural knowledge to participate in multilingual communities and to become successful and responsible citizens in a diverse, ever-changing world.

b. Long Term English Learner/Newcomer Programs: The Newcomer program has helped to create urgency, move achievement, and progress monitor 200+ newcomer students enrolling at the district yearly. The LTEL program is increasing reclassification, progress monitoring and a greater awareness of and EL achievement. Leave with examples of progress monitoring tools, as well as other practical teaching strategies to increase Newcomer and LTEL achievement.
